“No weekends. We clock off at five. Work’s not everything.”

Huw is the founder of Worktones—a design studio creating uniforms and workwear for people across hospitality and other hands-on industries. We visited his office in Surry Hills.

“We offer both off-the-shelf pieces and made-from-scratch customs.”

Worktones takes a dual approach, tailoring each design to suit both the space and the purpose. Their signature chef’s apron is made from 100% cotton.

“Fading marks? That’s a sign of hard work—something to be proud of,” he says.

“Sometimes growth is intentional. Other times, it just happens.”

What began with aprons has since grown into jackets, chore coats, and everyday workwear.

Ten years in, only a handful have left the team. Worktones remains intentionally small—evolving through shared experience and thoughtful conversation. Huw and his business partner Andrew aren’t asking what’s next—they’re asking how to evolve.

“Better, not just bigger.”

That thinking extends to the studio space too.

It started with a second-hand desk from Gumtree. Now it’s a light-filled showroom lined with custom shelving and tall windows —a space where people often stop, glance in, and share a quick hello as they pass.

Outside of work, Huw’s life revolves around family.

With two teenage daughters and a lively dog, he makes time for the outdoors, slow dinners, and a clear boundary between work and home.

“No weekends. We clock off at five. Work’s not everything.”

Simple. Sincere. Steady. Huw’s way of working—and living—is built around what matters most.
